This week, I am doing a close reading of the Spanish and Arabic translations of the famous biblical verse about love, 1 Corinthians 13. I think some of the most beautiful works of art have directly come from religious texts or have been inspired by them. I have selected this famous verse in my 4 favourite languages. I think any language learner should read the holy book(s) if he or she has an interest in understanding literature and culture. I think this verse doesn't need any further words nor an eloquent introduction.

f [13:7] Prv 10:12; 1 Pt 4:8.
1 If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. 2 And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated, 5it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, 6 it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. 9For we know partially and we prophesy partially, 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. 12 At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. 13 So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
El amor
1 Si yo hablara lenguas humanas y angélicas, y no tengo amor, vengo a ser como metal que resuena o címbalo que retiñe. 2 Y si tuviera profecía, y entendiera todos los misterios y todo conocimiento, y si tuviera toda la fe, de tal manera que trasladara los montes, y no tengo amor, nada soy. 3 Y si repartiera todos mis bienes para dar de comer a los pobres, y si entregara mi cuerpo para ser quemado, y no tengo amor, de nada me sirve. 4 El amor es sufrido, es benigno; el amor no tiene envidia; el amor no es jactancioso,no se envanece,5 no hace nada indebido, no busca lo suyo, no se irrita, no guarda rencor; 6 no se goza de la injusticia, sino que se goza de la verdad.7 Todo lo sufre, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta. 8 El amor nunca deja de ser; pero las profecías se acabarán, cesarán las lenguas y el conocimiento se acabará. 9 En parte conocemos y en parte profetizamos; 10 pero cuando venga lo perfecto, entonces lo que es en parte se acabará. 11 Cuando yo era niño, hablaba como niño, pensaba como niño, juzgaba como niño; pero cuando ya fui hombre, dejé lo que era de niño. 12 Ahora vemos por espejo, oscuramente; pero entonces veremos cara a cara. Ahora conozco en parte, pero entonces conoceré como fui conocido. 13 Ahora permanecen la fe, la esperanza y el amor, estos tres; pero el mayor de ellos es el amor.
L’amour
1 Supposons que je parle les langues des hommes et même celles des anges : si je n’ai pas d’amour, je ne suis rien de plus qu’un métal qui résonne ou qu’une cymbale bruyante. 2 Je pourrais transmettre des messages reçus de Dieu, posséder toute la connaissance et comprendre tous les mystères, je pourrais avoir la foi capable de déplacer des montagnes, si je n’ai pas d’amour, je ne suis rien. 3Je pourrais distribuer tous mes biens aux affamés et même livrer mon corps aux flammes, si je n’ai pas d’amour, cela ne me sert à rien. 4 Qui aime est patient et bon, il n’est pas envieux, ne se vante pas et n’est pas prétentieux ; 5 qui aime ne fait rien de honteux, n’est pas égoïste, ne s’irrite pas et n’éprouve pas de rancune ; 6qui aime ne se réjouit pas du mal, il se réjouit de la vérité.
7 Qui aime supporte tout et garde en toute circonstance la foi, l’espérance et la patience. 8 L’amour est éternel. Les messages divins cesseront un jour, le don de parler en des langues inconnues prendra fin, la connaissance disparaîtra. 9 En effet, notre connaissance est incomplète et notre annonce des messages divins est limitée ; 10 mais quand viendra la perfection, ce qui est incomplet disparaîtra. 11 Lorsque j’étais enfant, je parlais, pensais et raisonnais comme un enfant ; mais une fois devenu adulte, j’ai abandonné tout ce qui est propre à l’enfant. 12 A présent, nous ne voyons qu’une image confuse, pareille à celle d’un vieux miroir; mais alors, nous verrons face à face. A présent, je ne connais qu’incomplètement ; mais alors, je connaîtrai Dieu complètement, comme lui-même me connaît.13 Maintenant, ces trois choses demeurent: la foi, l’espérance et l’amour ; mais la plus grande des trois est l’amour.
المحبة
1 إنْ كُنتُ أتَكلَّمُ بألسِنَةِ النّاسِ والمَلائكَةِ ولكن ليس لي مَحَبَّةٌ، فقد صِرتُ نُحاسًا يَطِنُّ أو صَنجًا يَرِنُّ. 2 وإنْ كانتْ لي نُبوَّةٌ، وأعلَمُ جميعَ الأسرارِ وكُلَّ عِلمٍ، وإنْ كانَ لي كُلُّ الإيمانِ حتَّى أنقُلَ الجِبالَ، ولكن ليس لي مَحَبَّةٌ، فلَستُ شَيئًا. 3 وإنْ أطعَمتُ كُلَّ أموالي، وإنْ سلَّمتُ جَسَدي حتَّى أحتَرِقَ، ولكن ليس لي مَحَبَّةٌ، فلا أنتَفِعُ شَيئًا. 4المَحَبَّةُ تتأنَّى وتَرفُقُ. المَحَبَّةُ لا تحسِدُ. المَحَبَّةُ لا تتَفاخَرُ، ولا تنتَفِخُ، 5 ولا تُقَبِّحُ، ولا تطلُبُ ما لنَفسِها، ولا تحتَدُّ، ولا تظُنُّ السّؤَ، 6 ولا تفرَحُ بالإثمِ بل تفرَحُ بالحَقِّ، 7وتَحتَمِلُ كُلَّ شَيءٍ، وتُصَدِّقُ كُلَّ شَيءٍ، وتَرجو كُلَّ شَيءٍ، وتَصبِرُ علَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ. 8المَحَبَّةُ لا تسقُطُ أبدًا. وأمّا النُّبوّاتُ فستُبطَلُ، والألسِنَةُ فستَنتَهي، والعِلمُ فسيُبطَلُ. 9 لأنَّنا نَعلَمُ بَعضَ العِلمِ ونَتَنَبّأُ بَعضَ التَّنَبّؤِ. 10 ولكن مَتَى جاءَ الكامِلُ فحينَئذٍ يُبطَلُ ما هو بَعضٌ. 11 لَمّا كُنتُ طِفلًا كطِفلٍ كُنتُ أتَكلَّمُ، وكطِفلٍ كُنتُ أفطَنُ، وكطِفلٍ كُنتُ أفتَكِرُ. ولكن لَمّا صِرتُ رَجُلًا أبطَلتُ ما للطِّفلِ. 12 فإنَّنا نَنظُرُ الآنَ في مِرآةٍ، في لُغزٍ، لكن حينَئذٍ وجهًا لوَجهٍ. الآنَ أعرِفُ بَعضَ المَعرِفَةِ، لكن حينَئذٍ سأعرِفُ كما عُرِفتُ. 13 أمّا الآنَ فيَثبُتُ: الإيمانُ والرَّجاءُ والمَحَبَّةُ، هذِهِ الثَّلاثَةُ ولكن أعظَمَهُنَّ المَحَبَّةُ.
