The Sounds of Al Andalus - Arabic Music of Medieval Spain

I am a firm believer that you don't have to understand the lyrics of a song in order to be deeply moved by the song or just simply enjoy the music. However, understanding it obviously adds an extra layer to the experience of listening to music, so I have included a very famous song to include in my language learning process and share it with you.

This beautiful song is called "Lamma bada Yatathanna" لما بدا يتثنى, or "When (s)he begins to sway" said to be composed by Sheikh Muhammad Ar-Rahim Al-Masloub in the 8th century Andalusia. This type of poetic composition is called mwashah (Arabic: موشح) (also transliterated as mouachah). This word in English literally means "planned", probably referring to the structure of the poetry.

Se movía sutilmente –

Cuando empezó a moverse sutilmente,
exterminó a las jóvenes con su elegancia,
mi amor con su belleza es alucinante
Si me entrego por él, acaso vendrá?
En un minuto me cautivó
en un jardín y entre colinas,
hasta las ramas ha hecho prisioneras
de su amor cuando cantó.
Es mi promesa y quien me confunde,
ni de mi tortura de amor,
excepto el dueño de la belleza.

Lamma bada yatathanna
Hubbi jamalu fatanna
Awmâ bi LaHzihi asarna
Ah comme son regard m'a asservi!
Fil hubbi min law'ati
Illa maliku l-jamal
Que la reine de la Beauté!

This is a very popular song that passed the test of time, and you can see some versions of it below:
